I stayed at the Rutledge house and had probably the best experience of my life! Everyone there treated us fantastic. Think of it like a retreat where you can actually focus on yourself, without all of lifes hassles. I was in a dark place when I found this place. I am from Kentucky where places like this simply don't exist. They asked me some questions to make sure I qualified, and I'm glad I did! They helped me a lot and were able to get my medications right as well as give me a bunch of tools to help cope with society. They diagnosed me as well. I really can't speak highly enough. 5* for sure and I would add more if I could. If you're wanting to find yourself again and serious about your mental health, trust me, Don't hesitate!💯 😁 Edit: I went to the Murfreesboro location recently as well and feel obligated to express my appreciation there as well. Everyone treated me so nicely which allowed me to adjust and feel comfortable much faster. The staff was great as well as the amenities! These places allow smoking but in designated area so as to not interfere with people who do not choose to do so. A BIG thank you to everyone!!

Who Can Benefit from Family Group Therapy
Every family walks in with its own weather, and the bullets above are patterns, not entry requirements. If home has felt heavier than it should for longer than it should, that alone justifies the call, whichever description fits best.
Family Sessions, Group Sessions, and the Weekly Family Program: What Each One Does
Family and group work are cousins, not twins, and this page covers both on purpose. One heals the specific relationships you go home to; the other builds strength alongside people who simply understand. Here is how the formats divide the labor.
Format | Who is in the room | What it is for |
Family therapy | Your clinician, you, and the loved ones you choose to include | Repairing communication, trust, and the patterns that keep conflict alive |
Group therapy | A small circle of peers guided by a therapist | Perspective, accountability, and the relief of recognizing your struggle in others |
Weekly family program | Loved ones of current residents, meeting on a regular rhythm | Education and steady support that keeps families involved across a whole stay |
The formats reinforce each other. What surfaces in a group session often becomes the agenda for the next family session, and what a family learns in the weekly program makes every conversation afterward a little easier. Your clinician coordinates all three so no thread gets dropped.
A word about what family therapy is not, because misconceptions keep people away. It is not a trial where blame gets assigned, and it is not an intervention staged against one member. The person in treatment and the people who love them are on the same team here, working the same problem from different seats.
The evidence for involving families is unusually strong. A research review in the American Journal of Psychiatry, published by the American Psychiatric Association, found that family interventions reduce relapse rates, improve recovery, and increase the well-being of the family itself, meaning the people supporting you get healthier too. Few things in mental health care pay off in both directions at once.
Family strain rarely travels alone, so our clinicians also watch how it interacts with the mental health conditions our adult programs address, and they can pull additional methods from the Therapy Solutions column when one format is not enough.
What to Expect in Family Group Therapy Sessions
At Nashville Mental Health, families meet with a therapist in Family Group Therapy sessions. They talk about what’s happening at home and learn new ways to solve problems.
Sometimes, they play games or do activities to help them understand each other better. Every session is different, but the goal is always to help families feel happier and closer.
Sessions here stay respectful by design. Nobody gets ambushed, nobody is made the villain, and a skilled facilitator makes sure the quietest person in the room gets heard as clearly as the loudest. Many households also discover that roles they never chose, the peacemaker, the lightning rod, the invisible one, loosen once they are named out loud. Naming is half the repair.
Benefits of Family Group Therapy
How Family Involvement Fits Residential and Virtual Care
Family and group work does its best inside a larger structure. During residential treatment, group sessions happen daily as part of the clinical schedule, family sessions are arranged at a cadence that fits your situation, and the weekly family program hands your loved ones a place of their own to learn and be supported while you do your work. A calm setting, right down to the private chef and the pet friendly policy, keeps the atmosphere closer to a living room than a waiting room.
Group work also comes in a more focused form here: process group therapy, a smaller guided circle built for honest reflection among peers. Many residents attend both, since the two formats exercise different muscles. Group sessions carry their own quiet magic: advice lands differently coming from someone who has lived it, and offering your own hard-won perspective to someone newer turns pain into something useful.
For families separated by distance or schedules, a Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program holds structured sessions over secure video statewide, and loved ones can take part remotely, so geography stops deciding who gets to show up for whom.
How Families Get Started Here
No family needs to arrive with a plan, an agreement, or even everyone on board. This is the whole process:
1.Make the call together or alone
One motivated person is enough to start, and our line answers at every hour.
2.Let our team sort the coverage
We run the insurance verification and translate the results before any decisions are needed.
3.Plan the first session with a clinician
Together you decide who joins, what gets discussed first, and what stays off the table for now.
4.Show up as you are
Sessions meet your family at its current temperature, not an idealized one. If a family member cannot attend, the work continues anyway; sessions adapt to who is present, and clinicians can help you bring the lessons home to the people who were not in the room.
The strongest thing a family can do is ask for a referee. Call (916) 587-6860 whenever your household is ready, or write in through the Contact Us page and let us help you take it from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is family group therapy, and how does it work?
Family group therapy is a therapeutic approach where multiple family members participate in joint sessions to address issues affecting the entire family dynamic. It focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and fostering a supportive environment. Guided by a trained family therapist or clinical therapist, sessions ensure every voice is heard, promoting healing and understanding within the family. Visit SAMHSA or contact us today for more information.
Who can participate in family group therapy?
Sessions involve our adult clients together with the people who matter most to them, whether that means a spouse or partner, parents, siblings, or adult children. Extended family and chosen family are welcome when their presence would help. Sessions are customized to each family while creating a safe, supportive space for open dialogue, and the weekly family program keeps loved ones anchored in the process week after week.
What issues can family group therapy help address?
This therapy is effective in tackling many of the challenges families weather together, including trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD, grief, and everyday stress. By involving the household rather than one person alone, it builds a unified approach that lifts the emotional well-being of everyone involved.
How much does family group therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Family sessions are part of treatment at our Nashville center, so for admitted clients the cost is typically folded into the program rather than billed as separate appointments. Most PPO plans include family involvement under their mental health benefits, and our insurance verification lays out your exact coverage in advance, so the money question gets settled before the first session, not after it.
How long does family group therapy last, and what is the typical session format?
Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes, with the overall duration of therapy depending on family goals and therapist recommendations. Therapists trained in methods like EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) may incorporate these techniques to address individual or group needs effectively.
Can family therapy continue after residential treatment ends?
Yes, and continuing is often where the deepest change consolidates. Discharge planning can include ongoing family work, the weekly family program remains a resource for loved ones, and virtual sessions make staying involved practical even when schedules scatter. Recovery holds best in a household that keeps practicing.
